During the past few decades the world has seen its fair share of financial turbulence big and small and some with devastating effects. It is within these recent periods that we also observed the emergence with significant prominence of the Islamic financial system. The conventional and Islamic financial system has both seen major developments in the wake of each major crisis. These developments surely have come about through innovations and significant transformation of the financial systems.

A healthy and innovative financial sector is without doubt a prerequisite for a vibrant economy and its consequent benefits. Effective and efficient management is fundamental for future survival and profitability. The interaction of all participants in the financial markets to address these innovations is without doubt a necessity. The current role of conventional banks in the financial markets and their interactions with hedge funds is just an example of how in these modern times new innovative financial instruments are needed to remain competitive.

As an alternative financial system, the Islamic financial system should not lag behind in the need to innovate and introduce new ideas based on Islamic foundations. These valuable innovations will lead towards harmonisation with the demands of modern markets. The need to further develop financial products and services in compliance with Islamic Shariah is now essential to the survival and growth of the Islamic finance industry. Recent developments have produced to the world Shari’ah-compliant interest rate swap and Islamic Sukuk as the new form of debt. An innovative Islamic financial system will raise the competitive ability of Islamic financial instruments. An increased competitiveness within and across both the conventional and Islamic financial systems will surely benefits the world economy in terms of efficiency, effectiveness and profitability.

It is within this background of financial innovation and transformation that this conference seeks to explore and examined. This conference will also aim to address the challenges and the risks that financial innovation may create on the financial markets, its regulations and regulatory bodies, corporate governance, accounting and reporting.
